IDENTIFYING BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH SERVICE DESIGN METHODS

Mellyana Frederika

Project Manager at Pulse Lab Jakarta

Although the government is responsible for public services such as education, health and transportation, a public service is not necessarily provided by the government alone. In many public services, the government is no longer become the owner. We witness the growing number of social enterprises, organization that use commercial strategies to maximize improvements in human and environmental well-being, include maximizing social impacts alongside profits. Take example of D.Light Design, founded by Sam Goldman and Ned Tozun who manufacture inexpensive lamps and sell them in communities that don’t have reliable electricity. Jane Chen’s company manufactures a sleeping bag-like device called the “Thermpod,” which warms low-birth weight babies in hospitals and clinics that have unreliable electricity and heat lamps that don’t always work. From Indonesia, Gojek started by providing transportation through their trustworthy driver to delivering one-stop-shop convenience services.

This class is open to anyone who never had a chance to learned about the public sector but keen to create a work that has a social impact.

In this class, our mentor will guide participants to understand how public sector works and how to identify missing opportunities by applying service design methods. By attending this class, you will not become a public policy expert nor service designer, but you will be able to create your own idea taken from challenges in public sector which you can turn into business idea that has social impacts, either it is non-profit or for-profit business. Also participants will receive a set of tools to mitigating potential setbacks, unlocking new market opportunities, developing strategies through Stakeholder Mapping session.
